Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

These are the questions matcha shoppers ask most.

Is ceremonial matcha always better?

Not always.

The better choice depends on how you plan to use it. For Usucha (thin tea) or Koicha (thick tea), ceremonial matcha is often preferred.

For lattes, a culinary grade matcha is often the better fit because it has bolder flavours for mixing with milk.

Also, terms like “ceremonial” and “culinary” are not formally standardized in Japan, so the label alone does not guarantee quality.

Does matcha have caffeine?

Yes.

Matcha naturally contains caffeine, and ranges commonly fall around 19 to 44 mg per gram.

Since many servings use about 2 to 4 grams, one serving can vary a lot depending on how much powder you use

Why does some matcha taste bitter?

Bitterness usually comes down to three things: the quality of the matcha, water that is too hot, or using a stronger ratio than you actually enjoy.

Where is your matcha sourced from?

Our matcha is sourced from Japan, with each region offering its own flavour character.

Depending on the harvest and origin, you may notice differences in sweetness, umami, vegetal notes, or intensity from one matcha to another.

Is this pure matcha or does it contain anything else?

Our matcha contains 100% pure Japanese matcha green tea powder with no added sugar, fillers, or artificial ingredients.

Usage & Storage

Get the best cup with the right temperature, ratios, whisking method, and simple tips.

What water temperature should I use for matcha?

A good range is about 70 to 80°C (158 to 176°F).

Water that is too hot can make matcha taste more bitter and flatten some of the sweeter, more delicate notes.

Do I need to sift matcha first?

It is strongly recommended.

Sifting helps break up clumps before whisking, which makes the final drink smoother and easier to prepare.

Do I need a bamboo whisk?

Not necessarily.

A bamboo whisk is the traditional tool and gives the best texture for many people, but you can also use a milk frother.

How should I store matcha after opening?

Store it sealed, away from heat, light, air, and moisture.

We recommend refrigeration after opening for better freshness.

How long does matcha stay fresh?

Unopened shelf life is often around 180 days, but opened matcha is best enjoyed between 1-3 months for peak colour and flavour.

Should I keep matcha in the fridge?

You can, especially after opening, as long as it is tightly sealed so it does not pick up moisture or odours.
