Is One Tablespoon of Matcha Too Much?

Is One Tablespoon of Matcha Too Much?

For most people, one tablespoon of matcha is too much for a single drink.

A tablespoon can hold around 5 to 6 grams of matcha, while most cups only need 1 to 2 grams. Using a full tablespoon may make your matcha overly bitter, difficult to whisk, and much higher in caffeine than expected.

How Much Matcha Should You Use?

Start with around 1 gram of matcha for a lighter cup or 2 grams for a stronger matcha that can hold its flavour through milk and ice.

You can always add more next time, but jumping straight to a tablespoon means using several servings at once.

The amount you need also depends on what you are making. A small bowl of matcha with water may only need 1 gram, while a larger iced latte may taste better with 2-3 grams.

Why a Matcha Spoon Is Better Than a Tablespoon

We use The 1g Matcha Spoon because it removes the guesswork.

One scoop gives you a light cup of matcha. Two scoops create a stronger cup. It is much easier to adjust your drink when you know approximately how much powder you are actually using.

A kitchen tablespoon may be useful when matcha is being divided across a batch of cookies, cake, or several drinks. It is simply too large for measuring one regular cup.

What Happens If You Use Too Much?

Too much matcha may taste harsh, thick, or extremely grassy. Since matcha contains caffeine, a large serving may also leave some people feeling shaky, nauseous, restless, or unable to sleep.

This is more likely if you drink it quickly, have it on an empty stomach, or already consumed coffee or another caffeinated drink that day.

Measure the Cup You Actually Want

One tablespoon of matcha is usually more than you need. Start with 1 gram for something lighter or 2 grams for a bolder cup, then adjust based on how it tastes and how your body responds.
