Is Ceremonial Grade Matcha Really Better?

Is Ceremonial Grade Matcha Really Better?

Ceremonial grade matcha is not automatically better than every other matcha. It is usually the better choice when you want to whisk matcha with water and taste the powder on its own.

If you mainly make lattes, a latte grade matcha may actually work better.

What Does “Better” Mean for Matcha?

Better depends on the drink you are making.

Ceremonial grade matcha should taste smooth and balanced enough to enjoy without milk or sweetener. It may have natural sweetness, umami, fresh green notes and less harsh bitterness.

That makes it ideal for a traditional bowl of matcha. But those delicate flavours can disappear once you add a large amount of milk, ice and syrup.

When Is Worth It?

Ceremonial grade matcha is worth choosing when you:

  • Drink matcha with water
  • Prefer a smoother and less bitter cup
  • Want to taste the differences between regions and blends
  • Use little or no sweetener

Is Ceremonial Matcha Better for Lattes?

Not always.

You can use ceremonial matcha in a latte, and it may create a very smooth drink. However, a delicate ceremonial matcha can become difficult to taste through milk.

Latte grade matcha powder is usually fuller and richer, with enough strength to remain noticeable after milk and ice are added.

It may taste slightly bolder with water, but that does not make it lower quality for the job it is meant to do.

Do Not Trust the Label by Itself

“Ceremonial grade” is not a regulated classification, so the words on the package do not guarantee that the matcha will be good.

Look at the powder itself. Good matcha should have a fresh aroma, fine texture, vibrant green colour and a flavour that suits how you plan to drink it. The seller should also explain where it comes from, what it tastes like and whether it is best with water or milk.

A clear product description tells you more than a premium label.

Choose the Matcha That Fits Your Cup

Ceremonial grade matcha can be better, but only for the right purpose.

Choose it when you want to drink matcha with water and appreciate a more delicate flavour. Choose latte grade matcha when you want the tea to stay bold through milk and ice.

The best matcha is not the one with the most impressive label. It is the one that tastes right in the drink you actually make.
