How Much Matcha Powder Should You Use?

How Much Matcha Powder Should You Use?

Most people should start with 1 to 2 grams of matcha powder per drink. Use 1 gram for a lighter cup, 2 grams for a balanced cup, or 3 grams when you want a stronger latte that can hold its flavour through milk and ice.

A Simple Matcha Serving Guide

  • 1 gram: A lighter cup, it's a good starting point for beginners.
  • 2 grams: A balanced serving for most traditional matcha and lattes.
  • 3 grams: A stronger latte or a drink with more milk.
  • 4 grams or more: A very strong serving that most people will not need for one drink.

There is no single perfect amount. Matcha strength depends on the powder, how much liquid you use and how bold you want the flavour to be. You just have to try and figure out how much works for you.

How Much Matcha Should You Use With Water?

For matcha whisked with water, start with about 2 grams of powder and 60 to 80 mL of hot water.

Use 1 gram and since there is no milk or syrup covering the tea, adding more powder can make bitterness and astringency more noticeable.

How Much Matcha Should You Use for a Latte?

Use around 2 grams for a regular homemade latte. If you use a larger amount of milk or prefer a strong matcha flavour, increase it to 3 grams.

Whisk the powder with 30 to 60 mL of water first, then add the milk. This creates a smoother base and makes it easier to judge whether the drink needs more matcha.

Pay attention to how much milk is actually in the drink, not only the size of the glass. A large iced cup may look like a 16-ounce latte, but much of that space can be taken up by ice.

Should You Keep Adding More Matcha?

If your latte tastes weak, adding more powder is one option, but it is not always the best one.

Try using less milk, making a smaller drink or choosing a fuller matcha designed for lattes. Pouring 4 or 5 grams into a large cup may make the drink look greener, but it can also make it overly bitter and use up your matcha quickly.

Increase the amount gradually. Moving from 2 grams to 3 grams tells you much more than jumping straight to a tablespoon.

Make Measuring Matcha Easier

Teaspoons are not especially precise because matcha can be packed, levelled, or heaped differently each time.

Try using our 1g matcha spoon, it's designed to scoop 1 gram every time, perfectly without any guesswork.

Start With Two Grams, Then Adjust

Two grams is the most useful starting point for most matcha drinks.

The right amount is the one that lets you taste the matcha clearly without making the drink unpleasantly strong.
