Does Matcha Tea Break a Fast?

Does Matcha Tea Break a Fast?

Plain matcha tea usually does not break a fast if it is made with only matcha powder and water.

But there is one important catch: it depends on the type of fast you are following.

If you are doing a strict water fast, then matcha would technically break that fast because it is not water. If you are fasting for religious, medical, or clinical reasons, it is best to follow the exact guidelines you were given.

For most everyday fasting routines, the bigger issue is not the matcha itself. It is what gets added to it.

When Matcha Does Not Usually Break a Fast

Matcha tea is most likely to fit into a fast when it is prepared simply with water.

That means:

1. Matcha powder.

2. Water.

3. Nothing else.

No milk, no sugar, no honey, no syrup, no creamer, no collagen, no protein powder, and no sweetened flavouring.

This kind of matcha is very similar to drinking plain green tea during a fast. It gives you the taste and gentle caffeine without turning into a full drink with calories, carbs, or fat.

When Matcha Does Break a Fast

Matcha breaks a fast when you turn it into a latte or add anything with calories.

A matcha latte made with milk, oat milk, almond milk, cream, sweetener, honey, maple syrup, vanilla syrup, condensed milk, protein powder, or collagen is no longer just tea.

Even if it feels light, those additions can still break the fast.

Does Matcha Have Calories?

Yes, matcha powder has a small number of calories because it is made from whole ground tea leaves. Unlike steeped green tea, where the leaves are removed, matcha is consumed as a powder mixed into water.

The amount is still very low when you use a normal serving. That is why plain matcha tea is often treated similarly to black coffee or unsweetened tea during intermittent fasting.

Is Iced Matcha Okay While Fasting?

Iced matcha can be okay while fasting as long as it is made with matcha and water only.

An iced matcha latte is different. Once you add milk or sweetener, it breaks the fast.

Keep the Fast Clean, Keep the Latte for Later

Plain matcha tea is simple, unsweetened, and very low in calories, which makes it a good option for many intermittent fasting routines.

But once you add milk, sugar, sweetener, cream, collagen, or protein powder, it is no longer fasting-friendly.
